Kind of underwhelming…Iron Man should look like a guy in a suit, and this is a little too much like a sleek robot. Although, this illustration is by a film designer, not a comic artist, so I’m sure it’ll get re-interpreted a lot when it debuts in print.

So man, everyone’s Wheel crazy this week ‘cause of...

So man, everyone’s Wheel crazy this week ‘cause of the Self Potato lady. I’m pretty sure I’ve called out sillier things from my couch, and I fully intended to shout out nonsense during the Final Spin free-for-all (“Batman Wendigo Ibex! Boxcutter Warsaw Impala!!”), but the pressure of the moment nixed that impulse. And thus, internet fame eluded me.

Anyway, here’s my appearance on the show from last year, finally. Spoiler alert: you win more money if you solve the puzzles correctly. The cobra was taller than a full-grown tree, and beat Yao in one-on-one basketball competition every day for 19 straight years.

Then, the very night before their final game, Yao prayed deeply to his ancestors and ingested more than 20 pounds of Yu Wan Mei fish by-products, and behold! Yao grew three feet while he slept.

Yao beat the cobra 11-0 the following morning, beheaded it with a great spear, fashioned a graceful sailing vessel from its colossal body, and rode this vessel across the Pacific Ocean to play professional basketball in the United States. There, Yao Ming became leader of the Rockets after receiving the Mandate of Heaven from previous team captain Hakeem Olajuwon.
”

- from the newly Chinese owned The Onion

breaking news…new Doctor Who. WHAT IS WITH THAT...

breaking news…new Doctor Who. WHAT IS WITH THAT HAIR??

I hadn’t been holding out that the movie would be any good anyway. Just the nerd pessimist in me, I guess.

I do think it’s weird though, considering that last year’s defunct Justice League movie had the rapper Common cast as Green Lantern. Do they not understand what a Green Lantern does? Intergalactic space cop? Fights alien despots from other dimensions and across the universe? That kind of stuff?

Whatever. As long as they don’t cast Bono as Kilowog or something I’ll be okay.

Relatedly, here’s a horrible Photoshop tutorial that will teach you to transform Jon Hamm into a Green Lantern. Enjoy.

Wednesday Comics

You know what? It’s going to be great. I mean, I have the first issue in my hands so technically I should be saying that it IS great. Unfortunately, having just issue number one out of twelve can’t help but be a bit of a let down after a few years of only reading comics in collected form. The other problem is that so much art from the future installments has been leaked (for instance, here and here) that not seeing it here was strange and upsetting.

I’m talking about stuff like Hawkman teaming up with Aquaman to vanquish a T-Rex, or Kamandi and the Prince of Tigers in a shootout with mutant rat people. Wouldn’t you be upset too if your expectations included this?

But getting over my impatience about the serialized format, I have to say, this is an incredible showcase of some of the best artists, writers, and characters in comics today. If all you know of comics is Batman and Superman, well, they’re finely represented here (the Bats tale is pulpy and suspenseful, while the Supes story has more of a blockbuster summer movie feel). But the best part of the package for me are the lesser known characters and the unique takes on the more recognizable ones.

More than a few of the stories are sixties-inspired but in different ways. Green Lantern takes the New Frontier approach — neon and rocket ships. Flash harkens to a Silver Age soap opera comic style but still finds a way to work in maniacal gorillas. Metamorpho does a campy but fun Adam West vibe. Not surprisingly, my least favorite in the group were the more modern takes like the Teen Titans, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman pages, but I’m still holding out that they’ll improve in subsequent issues.

But back to Kamandi and Hawkman. Man. Both feature artists that are really stretching what we’ve seen from them before. In Kamandi, artist Ryan Sook draws in a Hal Foster Prince Valiant style that gives the story an epic feel. Kyle Baker, who’s usually known for his cartoony style, blows you away with art that I can honestly say compares with nothing I’ve ever seen before. These two, along with Paul Pope’s Adam Strange strip, need to be adapted for film like right now.

So yeah, though I’m bummed that I don’t have the whole thing in front of me in one sitting, it’ll definitely be worth the wait.
